Can motivation help working people to perform better? Can continuous motivation help sustain employee performance?

When employees truly believe that they will be recognized and rewarded for a job well done or demonstrated desired behaviors then they will be motivated. Companies and its managers must then build and sustain a motivating work environment that allows employees to perform while meeting their needs for recognition and reward.

The following seven techniques will help you create a “motivating work environment.”

1. Motivation starts from empathy.

The company culture and values should include putting employees as a priority. Putting people first should be part of the employee experience. Employees should know and feel that they are part of the team and the company cares for their welfare. Employees are more enthusiastic and committed to organizational goals when company values and policies demonstrate employee empathy and employees are treated with respect.

2. Employee motivation grows and blossoms in the right environment.

When employees feel nurtured, appreciated, acknowledged, and respected, they’ll give 100% of their time, effort, and commitment in return. The company culture and work environment that provides employees with the opportunity to attain their goals and experience what they value most in their professional lives will succeed. This is why you have 100+ year old companies like Procter&Gamble and Coca-Cola that are still market leaders today and will be for the next 100 years.

3. Revisit your company culture and local culture.

The company culture and local culture of the country or city where your employees live must be complementary and not conflicting. This is often an overlooked area especially for multinational organizations operating in various countries. Philippine companies operating in other provinces and cities should be aware of local cultural practices and ethnic values. If you reinforce the common values of both the company culture and the local culture in the home location of your employees then this will go a long way in building a motivating work environment.

4. Have fun in the workplace.

Enjoying your work makes it something that you truly look forward to. Employees will not consider their work as difficult and a burden to bear but something they look forward to everyday. Having fun is a basic human need. Furthermore, employees can enjoy working for your organization and their co-workers improving collaboration and increasing productivity.

5. Seek and you shall find.

If you focus on the lack of motivation in your employees, you’ll find more and more examples of it. When you seek to learn more about motivation and create an atmosphere that fosters it, you’ll find more examples of motivation in the workplace.

6. Foster teamwork and commitment.

Good teamwork and people who are open to collaboration helps get tasks done faster and better. Motivating employees is an on-going process because people are continually growing and changing. As they achieve something they want or value, they then seek to achieve more of the same. If motivation is not kept on your managerial front burner, you’ll see the fires in your employees slowly fade and die out.

7. Walk your talk.

The leaders of the organization and all managers should demonstrate the values and desired behaviors of the company. Most employees see what their managers do instead of what they just say as the norm. Let’s face it people lie. Moreover as they say “Actions speak louder than words”.

Demonstrating the behavior you want from your employees is the most effective way to convince employees to adopt the desired behavior and culture of the organization. If you want motivated employees, you need to become a role model for motivation. If you recognize and reward the right behavior then your employee sees this as real and concrete. Therefore, employees will continue to be motivated by what they see as examples and what they experience in the work environment.
